This work in progress is an investigation and reinterpretation through sculpture of female protector deities of the Tibetan buddhist tradition. I have completed the head of the figure in bisque-fired clay without surface coloration. The female protectors may be traditionally depicted crushing obstacles beneath their heels and holding implements of enlightened activity in their hands. In my own work, sculpted representations of the “divine feminine,” tropes of modern motherhood, feminist political imagery, and personal and cultural symbolic objects will take the place of traditional objects and implements in the female protector’s iconography.
